He caught three touchdowns in the Florida State 8A Championship game, and for the season, 42 balls for an eye-catching 1052 yards and 15 scores. That's 25 yards a catch.
C.J. Worton plays with flair. A 3-star leaper with great timing at 6-1, 175, he goes up and takes the ball on fade routes, plucks it out of the air with his hands only over the middle, and eludes defenders for big plays. He's fast and shifty with great hands.
Worton earns a whoa: C.J. Worton, a dynamic pass-catcher from Florida, can really go up and get the ball, but can the Ducks go down to South Dade and get him?
Committed to Florida State since August of 2012, he's recently opened up his commitment to tremendous interest, particularly from Miami, Florida, West Virginia, and Central Florida, where his older brother J,J. is currently a star wideout, making a sensational one-handed game-saving touchdown catch against Temple in November.
The eldest brother, Cody, played at Florida on national championship teams with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow as a walk-on safety and wide receiver.
The family competition has blessed C.J. with exceptional competitive instincts. He fights for balls, blazes past coverage and wriggles out of tight spaces. His highlight film is three minutes of "wow" and "oh my" but the trouble is, Oregon only recently offered, and he might not make it out for his scheduled visit.
Justin Hopkins of 247 Sports reported Wednesday he's coming January 31st.
But on the same day, Worton gave an interview to Chris Hays, who covers recruiting for the Orlando Sentinel. He told that reporter, "It's like a 13-hour flight or something like that to Oregon, and I can't miss any school, so by the time I got out there it wouldn't be much time to actually see the facilities and everything before I had to come right back home."
From Miami, United and American offer connecting flights to Eugene that come in around eight and a half hours, depending on head winds.
The flashy senior has a trip this weekend trips to Gainesville this weekend, so Matt Lubick's efforts may come up empty. Watching his film, however, the inevitable comparison is to another skinny, tenacious playmaker, Jeff Maehl. Getting Worton to land in Eugene, and then landing him, would be a special delivery.
Yeah, Eugene is a 14 1/2 hour flight from San Fran and it's tomorrow when you land....oh, wait, that's Sydney. Never mind.
Good new! Derek of Bloguin added a technical fix suggested by Livefyre, and the comments section should be working a lot smoother now. I am able to backspace, correct and start new threads, and I hope it's working seamlessly in your browsers also.
Somebody needs to tell this young man that it's 13 hours round trip, only 6-1/2hrs one way, to get here from FL.
Not to mention that when all things are considered, it would be time well spent!
Any version of Jeff Maehl sounds great to me, snatching him out of Florida makes it even sweeter, his concern for not wanting to miss any school, is not in Oregon's favor, but a nice sentiment in any respect.
@DrakeMallard He's probably not coming at this point. Although we can certainly understand a player's desire to play closer to home and nearer to family, it's a shame to miss out on this kind of receiving talent.
@Raygun383 If Charles Nelson commits this weekend, there may not be a spot for Worton, but there's a lot to like in his highlights, except his tendency to hot dog at the goal line.
@Ducko30 Featured him because he has a recent Oregon offer and I like his highlights, but yes, he's a longshot at this point.
@Ducko30 He reminds me of Maehl in his tenacity going to the ball, and he may have better hands and explosiveness.
@Ducko30 Frankly, the Ducks recruiting hasn't been all that impressive. They still can take 5 or 6 players and they are frankly, deep into their plan C, D and E's at this point. It has been pretty much disappointing news ever since Baker de-committed. Frankly thought the Ducks would be better organized this year but they weren't. Recruiting class is slipping. Not bad but not what they have been used to.
@sozeduck @Ducko30 To me it's a mix. They've recruited some really solid players who have tremendous upsides. Justin Hollins is one we've haven't talked about much. Royce Freeman is a super-charged diesel of a running back, Morgan Mahalak a terrific prospect at qb. Jalen Brown, Arrion Springs, Tua Talia, all outstanding prospects.
But it's a smallish class, and that downgrades the perception. They missed out on some targets. One thing to keep in mind is that Oregon's senior class is smaller this season, and they got three big re-commitments in Mariota, Grasu, and Ekpre-Olomu. Several teams around the conference lost star players to early entry while the Ducks kept three all-conference starters. That's huge.
@sozeduck have to disagree lmfao, poona ford, McGraw, juju smith are hardly C plans
@lexusduck @sozeduck You're about a year behind already in what matters. Top 10 was last year and now the BCS is gone. Top four is what matters now. You don't get there with 24th best recruiting class. Do you really think this is why Phil Knight spent all the money on facilities? To finish 24th in recruiting! You need to check yourself and your reasoning.
@sozeduck @lexusduck Smith visited October 25th. McGraw visited December 13. Lealaimatafao vists this weekend. Ducks need two add two defensive tackles, a speed receiver, and another defensive back, at minimum. Right now recruiting is in the B-/C+ range, but this weekend's visits could kick it up to a B. Mike Bellotti used to always say that the true measure of a recruiting class comes in two or three years.
@sozeduck lol ok sorry didn't know you were the authority on Ducks recruiting. Where did I say they were visiting? I didn't. McGraw is not a plan B he's a top notch recruit. Lmfao is a top 300 DT which we desperately need. We have a shot at the speedster from FL.You just sound like a whiner in your post about a down class'' blah blah. Who cares about a top-10 class!? We take the 3-star kid and turn him into a Super Bowl starter. These rankings don't mean sh%t. OK we lost Budda, he's 5'10, 175. We have 5 of him on offense already. Look at our current commits.....Freeman!? Are you kidding, he looks like Adrian Peterson at 18 years old. Crosby is a beast, Swain is 225, Springs could start Day 1, Lousi potentially the best Juco OG. Quit whining and appreciate what we have already. This goes for all Duck fans. OK so our class is ranked 24th or whatever. We finish top-10 where it matters
@lexusduck Ford isn't even visiting, Smith isn't visiting, McGraw was a plan B lmfao yourself.
@lexusduck@sozeduckI have a really good feeling about JuJu for some reason. I can not explain it but just a feeling. Not sold on McGraw though. He is high on Oregon but there is a love affair with TAMU for a lot of recruits right now and I can not figure out why except they are in the SEC. With JM and his big receiver leaving not to mention their bog OL Mathews gone. Their defense sucks as well. Just do not get recruiting sometimes.
