Oregon defensive tackle Jared Ebert, a junior transfer from Iowa Western Community College, suffered the loss of his father Jim on Tuesday, July 26th. Jim Ebert died while climbing Mt. Whitney with Jared's brother Justin.
Mr. Ebert was an accomplished mountain climber, rock climber, instructor, filmmaker, nature photographer and guide who taught climbing and wilderness survival training. He led groups who scaled the Alps, Mount Kilamanjaro, and the Andes. He taught climbing to students at the University of Iowa and founded Alpenglow Adventures, an organization that allowed severely disabled individuals the opportunity to experience outdoor adventures with the help of a team of volunteers. His expertise took him all over the world, and he had great pride in a long history of expeditions and achievements without serious injury to any of his students.
The Ebert family has a profound personal faith, and celebration of life ceremonies are being delayed until winter. The Oregon Duck community certainly wishes them strength and comfort in their loss, and will be supportive of Jared as he continues his college career and mourns his father.
So sorry to learn this! I was just looking up Jim's contact info to give to my son, who is a rafting guide who wants to do some serious climbing and is a safety nut. Jim's father John was my "Uncle Johnny," brother of my grandmother.
Never met Jim, but admired him tremendously. My thoughts and prayers are with his family .
Jared is an exceptionally motivated and focused young man. He told me back in February that his parents were his inspiration in life, and I'm sure that is a foundation that will provide him discipline and strength throughout his life. While it's never easy to lose your father, the love of a great father lives on in the heart of a son forever. Jared has the kind of parents you'd want every young man to have.
Thanks stroupenator for sending along your good wishes for the Ebert family.
I'm sure the entire Duck family sends their thoughts and prayers to Jared and his family in this tragic time. What a devastating loss.
here is a link to a site that was created by jared's father jim and which reads as an autobiography of jim ebert as well as insight into jared and his family-- its long listed, and parts directly about jared are near the bottom...check it out. copy and paste the link...
Thanks for sending that along nyd. The Ebert family has created a wonderful legacy, and Jim Ebert is one of those people whose light, energy, character and passion will live on for a long while in many people. It certainly lives on in Jared, who is an exceptional young man.
